Gender non-conforming, British artist Hannah Gluckstein referred to herself simply as “Gluck.” This is Medallion (1936), a.k.a. the “You/We” picture, inspired by watching a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni with her lover Nesta Obermer (background), a wealthy philanthropist and playwright. Of course the work’s title and appearance link it to the tradition of ancient Roman medallions, on which emperors and other significant individuals appear in profile. Here the lovers stare into the future together. When the work was exhibited, Gluck wrote to Obermer, “Now it is out, and to the rest of the Universe I call Beware! Beware! We are not to be trifled with.”

There may be future gazing in this portrayal of the two lovers, but there's also a significant difference in the artist's look of intensity, her gaze leveled directed either toward the past or the present (both would have held challenges). Also, a look of pure determination in her eyes that can't be missed. Inspired by this work and its beautiful, finely honed rawness. Thank you, Gene!

You’re quite right, !inda, in noting the difference. It was nit a simple relationship. Her lover traveled the world with her rich husband, not easy for our artist.

Fierce love! A medallion is a portrait for the ages, and here we are.
