Swept Off Their Feet

Here is an ebullient Marc Chagall with his fiancee Bella, three weeks before their 1915 wedding. Her parents opposed the match, thinking Marc wouldn't amount to much. Bella is trying to place the birthday bouquet Marc has given her on the table--if she can only keep her feet!

Great to be reminded of these lovely masterpieces--and introduced to a few pieces I never knew about--e.g., the Laurencin painting. Thanks for producing this daily bit of happiness. I look forward to clicking on your link every morning now and being lifted from the floor like Chagall three weeks before his wedding to his beloved. Beautiful.

Here's one of my favorite love poems, by Catullus, to complement`all the great art work:

Lesbia,
Live with me and love me
So we can laugh
At all the sour-faced strictures
Of the wise.
The sun, once set, will rise again,
But when our sun sets there will be darkness
And an endless sleep.

So kiss me now a hundred times
And a thousand, and a thousand more
After that, till with so many hundred-thousand kisses
We shall both lose count.

Nor any can,
From envy of such kisses,
Put his finger
On the number of sweet kisses,
You of I, and I of you, darling, have had.
