Time for A Little Sunshine and FUN!

So here's Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 1880 Luncheon of the Boating Party, the huge (58 x 61 inches) and last true Impressionist painting he did. In this dazzling combination of still life, figure painting, and landscape, we have his friends and models gathered at the floating restaurant Maison Fournaise at Chatou on the Seine (It's still there! You can do this, too!). Good friend and fellow painter Gustave Caillebotte sits at lower right in straw hat. Girlfriend--and later, wife--Aline Charigot pets the dog at lower left. And: Renoir painted this with his non-dominant hand; he had broken his right arm in a bicycle accident. Shall we join them  for the conversation, food, wine, embraces, and sunshine? Why not?

You have made such wonderful selections this year! I find myself going back to revisit them all even as I wait to see what each new day will bring.. I am not sure I could pick a single one that I enjoy the most, but perhaps today's with its celebration of friendship (as well as Renoir's love for his model) has a special poignancy in this time of wintery, covid, isolation.

I used to worry about this: it was so warm that two of the guys have taken their shirts off, yet the women are swathed in layers of clothing. And there’s a guy in the background in formal dress, including top hat. At least some of the must be quite uncomfortable!

Thanks for all of these wonderful works!
