"A kiss is just a kiss...." Except in this case! In this Louvre sculpture by Antonio Canova, c. 1793, "Cupid Reviving Psyche," the kiss is essential! You see, Venus had sent Psyche to the Underworld to retrieve a jar from Proserpina containing "Divine Beauty." And Venus had warned her NOT to open it. Bad girl, Psyche did open it and was overcome by nasty fumes from the River Styx. Fortunately, Cupid AKA Eros AKA Amor spied her and brought her back to consciousness with the kiss he's preparing here. So, really "it's still the same old story, a fight for love and glory, a case of do or die...." Whew! Close call!

My favorite work in the Louvre. Thanks, Gene!
